capable of winning a nationwide cellular license from
the Italian government.
Value: $2 billion
Alliance created: Omnitel SpA, composed of shareholders
Olivetti (Italy) and Cellular Communications International
Inc. (United States), with later additions including
Telia (Sweden) and Bell Atlantic (U.S.).
Result: Nationwide GSM cellular license won
by Omnitel SpA. Shareholders Mannesmann and Olivetti
eventually bought Cellular Communications International
and its stake in Omnitel for approximately $2 billion.
